Everything You Told Me Lucy Dawson 9781782396277 Books Reviews
3.5 stars rounded up.
I really enjoyed You Sent Me a Letter which I read last year so I was quite excited to get my hands on this, Ms Dawson's latest offering. Everything You Told Me is a slow burn psychological thriller that will get under your skin and slowly fester as it plays out. Sally wakes up in a taxi miles away from home with £400, an apparent suicide note, feeling woozy and with no recollection of how she got there. We then follow her return home, to her friends and family who all rally around to try and help her. Well, I say help. It soon becomes evident that someone is not what they seem and Sally faces a race against time to figure out the truth of it all.
Well, we do have a stellar cast of suspects in this book. Some with motives that are all too obvious straight away, others whose intentions get slowly uncovered as the book progresses. There are secrets lies, manipulation and misdirection as the author takes the reader on what I thought was a pretty solid journey with the odd twist and turn, dead end and red herring, leading to a rather interesting reveal which I had partly already guessed.
Characters were, lets just say, interesting. I pretty much hated every one of them, especially Sally. I really didn't have much sympathy for her throughout the book. I found her to be most unlikable and am really struggling to find any redeeming characteristics. I know I don't have to like characters in a book to enjoy the book but I have to connect in some way with them and I am afraid that I really didn't care about Sally one little bit. And not caring about her meant that I really didn't care about what may or may not be about to happen to her. As for the rest of the cast, as soon as I was introduced to a new one, I started wondering why they would hurt Sally as everyone was under suspicion at some point in the book. Well, probably not, but it did feel like that at times!
Characters aside, the plot was well constructed if a little convoluted. It mostly flowed well but I did feel that it was a little bit contrived at times. As already mentioned, it's a slow burn book which ramps up throughout the book with pretty good pacing. Sadly though, the main premise of the book is nothing really new. I have read quite a few similar books to this one this year and, although this is a good example of one, it is by no means the best. Maybe I am spoilt by the sheer quantity of books I read per year (approx 300) and so the quality pool gets a bit diluted at times.
All in all, a solid read that left me mostly satisfied. Put it this way, I wouldn't be put off reading another book by this author.
My thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Sally is struggling to take care of her two children, Chloe and Theo. Theo is a baby and he cries a lot. Sally's husband Matthew doesn't help out much, so she struggles on her own. After going to bed one night Sally wakes up on a cliff 300 miles away from home with a suicide note in her pocket. She has no idea how she got there and doesn't remember anything about the night, she fell asleep just like she usually does and after that everything becomes a blur. What happened in the hours after she put her head on her pillow and where was she before she was dropped off by a taxi driver and found near a cliff?
Sally's mother-in-law is a child psychiatrist and she assesses the situation. She doesn't think Sally is a danger to herself and others. Her family should just keep an eye on her, so she doesn't have to be admitted. Sally is happy to be home with her two children again and doesn't feel depressed or suicidal, but nobody believes anything she says. What happened to her that night, can Sally discover the truth without any help?
Everything You Told Me is a gripping story. Because of Theo's constant crying Sally doesn't get much sleep. Her husband has to work a lot and he doesn't make much time for his family. When Sally almost dies his behavior changes, but he doesn't believe what she tells him about the night she can't remember and he treats her like she's made of glass. Nobody wants Sally to be alone with her children. Her mother-in-law is there to supervise, her parents come over to help out and her brother regularly calls her for updates. Sally thinks someone wants to do something to her, but who could it be? She has her suspicions, but are they correct or are the people around her right and does she have a problem? Finding out the truth kept me on the edge of my seat. Of course I had my suspicions and I couldn't wait to see if I was right. I always love it when a story makes me so curious.
Lucy Dawson's writing flows easily and she knows how to build tension. Everything You Told Me evolves around Sally and the people who are close to her. There are many things that don't add up and my heart ached for Sally. She is so isolated from everyone else in her world and she desperately needs someone who's on her side, but nobody really listens to her. I admired how she remains strong and doesn't give up. The atmosphere is oppressive and tense and I loved how the story sometimes took my breath away. I couldn't put the book down because of it. Lucy Dawson has written a great mysterious story with a fabulous ending.
Really didn't like this book at all! Found the perpetually crying baby issue to be annoying. Ending was beyond bad.
Good
Another goody
most of the story is kind of boring. The interesting part comes at the end (but it can be too late for some readers). I didnt hate it, it was just OK.
